Where is this place? : The M-Monument

Entering The University Tokyo Hongo campus through the Akamon Gate and continuing straight towards the Faculty of Medicine Building 2, you will see a grey colored sculpture of two cones holding a shiny silver ball in the middle. At first glance, it looks odd and does not really fit the surrounding yellow brick buildings. Among the other sculptures of previous presidents and prestigious professors at the Hongo campus, such as the statue of architect Josiah Condor in the Engineering campus it is a quite unique one. This non-portrait sculpture has underlying symbolism.

This statue is the winning design from a 2008 student competition for a monument as a part of the 150-anniversary memorial project of the Faculty of Medicine and the affiliated hospital of The University of Tokyo. The design is symbolic. The overall shape “M” stands for medicine. The two cones symbolize the relationships between medial staff and patients, the Faculty and the Hospital, and education and research. The shinny silver ball represents life that is cradled  and supported by medical science.

Also as a part of the memorial project, the Museum of Medicine and Health was established in 2011. The Museum of Medicine and Health is a three-minute walk from the sculpture and located in the same building as the Medical Library. Permanent exhibitions introduce the historical development of the Faculty and the Hospital. Temporary exhibitions, changing two or three times a year, highlight different themes. The current exhibition till October 10 2014 is on diabetes.
